UWA Independence Unlocked

Vision Connection hosted Independence Unlocked at the University of Western Australia, welcoming around 35 optometry students for an evening focused on exploring career opportunities in independent optometry.

The team provided a dinner for the optometry students followed by a presentation. The session was led by Joanne Scott-Dostine, Vision Connection’s CEO, alongside Belinda Musitano, Vision Connection Advisory Board member, and Helen from Eyes@Optometry. Together, they shared their experiences working in independent practice, discussed the pathway to independence, and provided insights into what students can expect as they transition from university into the profession.

Following the presentation, students took part in an extended Q&A session, asking thoughtful questions about working in independent practice, career pathways, and the decisions they’ll face as they begin their professional careers. The open discussion allowed students to hear first-hand perspectives from experienced practitioners while helping the Vision Connection team better understand the questions and support future graduates are looking for.

The evening concluded with students learning more about Vision Connection and how they can stay connected through individual membership, providing ongoing access to future student events, webinars, industry updates, and opportunities within independent optometry.
